Mustang Sally Riley Misty is a coming 18 year old Quarter Horse Cross mare that was in serious danger of being shot by her last owner. She is VERY friendly and easy to catch. She is subordinate in the herd. She has been spoiled but also has been treated very rough by someone. Her mouth was close to ruined from being jerked on by teenagers that were riding her previously with a severe bit. ATKH XS NRG aka Gracie The horses are listed for sale on this site are horses that I have trained or rescued, rehabilitated and retrained. The monies collected from their adoptions and sale as well as fees charged for training horses go directly into hay and grain for the rescue horses, for vet care, medications, etc. This is how I am able to feed them. Be a part of the solution not the problem - never breed a backyard mare! Adopt a rescued horse instead!!
Horses above are listed on the following horse for sale sites;
The following horses are for adoption - they need some special work and attention. All horses to qualified adopters only.
Adoption fees are NON-NEGOTIABLE and non-refundable. I will refund the adoption fee within the first week of adoption only with the return of the horse to me if it does not work out.
The horses in the For Sale section are horses that have either been through training here as projects to feed the rescue horses, or are being promoted by me for friends.
Mustang Sally is an approximately 12 year old BLM mustang mare. (I am going to shave her neck very soon and get for sures). She is a very nice sensible mare. She has had a few owners but she did get a decent start under saddle. She has not been ridden since last April. She has been ridden out on the trail 6 or 7 times and did very well. She has been packed on also. She is not a spooky horse.
Sally would be a good horse for an experienced teen or an experienced adult. She is going to be retrained here this spring and get some finish training that she never got. She has great feet that are natural trim and she is apparently fine that way. She is currently underweight, bad with her hind feet, and pushy on the lead - she needs some refreshing but is available for adoption now. Her owner is sad and loves her very much but can no longer keep her due to her health problems. Better photos coming as soon as the weather is better and Sally gains some weight! She's on Corn Oil and Alfalfa Pellets and was wormed at intake.

Riley has undergone a change in the last six months. He is not as reactive as he used to be and seems to want to interact with people more now - he used to be rather standoffish. He has not been worked with that much in the past year but I have kept him going being saddled, tied, mounted, bathed and groomed, feet, and a little lunging when I had time.
BLM Mustang gelding, 7 years old, foaled in 2002. From the Pine Nut Herd in Nevada. Riley is a natural jumper even though he is not tall. A victim of the economic crunch, he was abandoned by his owner at a boarding facility in 2008. Had extensive groundwork done in 2008, ground drives, Down Under Horsemanship trained, ties, bathes, trims, lunges like a dream, trained to the bit (stop, turn flex), has had extensive desensitization with tarps, plastic bags, has been packed on in 2005, laid across, mounted while tied, carries a mannequin but has not been ridden.
Riley is an extremely smart and spunky little horse. He would be a great little trick horse. Needs lots more desensitization on his butt. Can be reactive and fearful - some of this is a game to him. He would come out of this if the person working with him is consistent. He realy needs a job. SUPERB unheard of natural balance, can canter at the pace of a normal horse's walk, natural collection, also GREAT reaching leg flicking extensions. Would be incredible in the Dressage ring. Quick on his feet. Would also be great in gymkhana, or perfect endurance horse. Social, but does best with an Alpha horse. Picks on subordinates. Loves to play in the sprinklers on a hot day.
Riley has not been trained as a bucking horse. He had a few bad starts and got away with acting up. He needs someone to lay the law down to him and ride the buck out of him. Videos on YouTube - under downundermustangs. Adoption fee $500.00.

Misty
Misty is currently being retrained. Working on regaining her trust and softening her mouth and her very defensively stiff body with dressage. We are putting her back in an eggbutt french link snaffle and turning her into a very happy horsey through the use of light hands and correct riding technique. She is already showing VAST improvement just from being treated fairly, and we even got a little lipstick out of her. She is a good horse for an intermediate rider. She is a short 14.1 hands but very stout. In the right hands she is a dead broke wonderful trail horse. She is barn sour when you take he out by herself, but fine with another horse. She has done gaming and rodeo events.
Misty has bad feet - they are wide and the hoof wall is thin, as well as the soles are very thin so she MUST have either shoes or hoof boots on all four feet to be sound and she will be shod here next Spring in Epona shoes. If you can offer Misty the forever home she deserves please call Down Under Mustangs at 530-261-1920. Adoption fee $500.

More horses for adoption coming soon this Spring - beginning intake March 1st.
This great little Arabian mare is purebred, pedigreed, and was starved and neglected at the home she was rescued from. She has had a terrible wire cut that almost cut her poor neck in half. She is 14 years old and papered. She is a granddaughter of Khemosabi and a great granddaughter of Bask.
Gracie had no clue of leg aids except to go fast forward. She was iron mouthed and only knew stop and go. She is now in a beautiful Dressage frame, on the bit, and gives gorgeous sidepass, shoulder in, leg yield, rein back, and square stops. She also gives lovely turn on the forehand and on the haunches. She has a bit of trouble bending to the left from her neck injury. Working on slowing the gaits down. Has a great slow trot and is beginning to have a great slow canter - although she loses her balance after a few strides. She is more balanced in right lead than in left. She tends to crossfire - I don't know if you could train that out of her since I think its due to her neck injury.
Gracie melts when you praise her, and gives many submissive signs now when being handled and ridden. She loves to work. She is awesome on the trails. She spooks a bit around spots of snow.
Gracie is a stall weaver. She was kept stalled at one time which caused the habit. She is a wonderful trail horse, sweet and safe, but needs a firm hand at times. GORGEOUS extensions. Submissive in the herd. To a forever home only. Great lesson horse. For sale $1500.

The horses that are up for adoption have limited training, special needs, or are back to health after a bad situation. These horses will continue to be for adoption until a home can be found for them. If they do not find a home, they will be trained as soon as I have time to do so, and eventually make the for sale list below so that I can go on rescuing other horses. Down Under Mustangs is a no-kill rescue, except in the case of terminal or incurable painful illnesses.
