Riley Misty is a coming 18 year old Quarter Horse Cross mare that was in serious danger of being shot. Misty has a lot of baggage. She has obviously been spoiled but also has been treated very rough and beat on by someone. Her mouth is close to ruined from being jerked on by teenagers that were riding her previously with a severe bit. She pretty much had the attitude that this is how she would be treated and that's normal. Rosie Hunter Jayce Badger's California Girl - ADOPTED! Jerry - ADOPTED! Merrylegs - ADOPTED! ATKH XS NRG aka Gracie Whiskey The horses are listed for sale on this site are horses that I have trained or rescued, rehabilitated and retrained. The monies collected from their adoptions and sale as well as fees charged for training horses go directly into hay and grain for the rescue horses, for vet care, medications, etc. This is how I am able to feed them. Be a part of the solution not the problem - never breed a backyard mare! Adopt a rescued horse instead!!
Horses above are listed on the following horse for sale sites;
The following horses are for adoption - they need some special work and attention. All horses to qualified adopters only.
Adoption fees are NON-NEGOTIABLE and non-refundable. I will refund the adoption fee within the first week of adoption only with the return of the horse to me if it does not work out.
The horses in the For Sale section are horses that have either been through training here as projects to feed the rescue horses, or are being promoted by me for friends.
This guy REALLY needs a home! BLM Mustang gelding, 7 years old, foaled in 2002. From the Pine Nut Herd in Nevada. Riley is a natural jumper - this horse can clear a 4 foot fence with virtually no effort. Would be a great horse for an experienced teenager. A victim of the economic crunch, he was abandoned by his owner at a boarding facility. Has had extensive groundwork done in 2008, ground drives, Down Under Horsemanship trained. Ties, bathes, trims, lunges like a dream, trained to the bit, has had extensive desensitization with tarps, plastic bags, has been packed on, laid across, mounted, carries a mannequin but has not been ridden.
Riley is an extremely smart, very sensitive, and spunky little horse. Needs lots more desensitization on his butt. Can be reactive and fearful - some of this is a game to him. He would come out of this if someone could be very consistent with him. I have too many horses to care for at my rescue and can't do this with him. He was really coming along great last year. He will buck and blow up a little and then stop himself.
SUPERB unheard of balance, can canter at the pace of a normal horse's walk, natural collection, also GREAT reaching leg flicking extensions. Would be incredible in the Dressage ring. Quick on his feet. Would also be great in gymkhana. Social, but does best with an Alpha horse. Picks on subordinates.
Riley has not been trained as a bucking horse. He had a few bad starts and got away with acting up. He needs someone to lay the law down to him and ride the buck out of him. Videos on YouTube - under downundermustangs. Adoption fee $250.00.

Misty
Misty is currently being retrained here. Working on regaining her trust and softening her mouth and her very defensively stiff body with dressage. We are putting her back in an eggbutt french link snaffle and turning her into a very happy horsey through the use of light hands and correct riding technique. She is already showing VAST improvement just from being treated fairly. She is a good horse for an intermediate rider. She is a short 14.1 hands but very stout. She acts like a jerk the first fifteen or so minutes that you ride her and then she evens out. She will pin her ears and refuse to go and mind. Once the lay the law down to her, she is like a dead broke kids pony. She is barn sour when you take he out by herself, but fine with another horse.
Misty has bad feet - they are wide and the hoof wall is thin, as well as the soles are very thin so she MUST have either shoes or hoof boots on all four feet to be sound (I would recommend Epona Shoes for her) and she will be shod here next Spring. She seems to be rather arthritic in the hinds as well and would benefit from a joint supplement, which she will be on over the winter. For more info on her please call Down Under Mustangs at 530-261-1920.

Rosie - ten to twelve year old molly mule, owners left at a boarding facility. She may be broke to ride - they said they had not used her for several years but did not say anything more than that. She has been saddled and packed a bit on and she has obviously done it before. 14 hands. Hard to catch. Rosie is in Etna in Scott Valley. $500 obo. Call Manuel Rais at 530-467-5637.

This very pretty Peppy San Badger filly is left over from a breeding program in Siskiyou County. The papers can be pursued through AQHA by the old owners, who are nice people and would help you obtain them. In the process of getting her pedigree to post online.
Foaled April 26th 2006, this filly just turned three years old. She has had no handling - seen people but is semi feral. She has a lovely shape and nice big butt. Will be 15 hands or so.
She has had her first halter on and is learning to lead and to lunge, and be handled. I will continue training as always through saddle starting or until a home can be found. Adoption fee $500 - to approved home only. Must have training experience to adopt. Videos on You Tube under downundermustangs.

Quarter Horse cross gelding, DOC BAR and HOLLYWOOD GOLD lineage. 5 years old. Loads, ties, bathes, packs, lunges great. Completely gentle, anyone can handle. Very sweet disposition. Does BEST with an Alpha horse.. Has been shod for toe out in the front. He is sound. Jerry has been packed on in the mountains for two plus years. He makes a GREAT pack horse. He will be a very good saddle horse with proper training. Long strided, Thoroughbred build.
Lunges, ties, bathes, loads, has been mounted repeatedly but has not yet been ridden. Starting under saddle this Spring.
Adoption fee $500.00.

This sweet little buckskin Quarter pony is 3 years old. Approx 13.3 hands, may grow a little bit more. This little gem was terribly neglected - with good feeding and exercise, she is back to health. Big dent on her nose where a halter was left on too long. She has gained about 150 lbs and has grown a full three inches in the last six months! Great driving prospect. Lovely disposition, very sweet and calm. Subordinate in the herd. Lunges, has been saddled and mounted, bitted, feet have been handled and trimmed, ties great. Not spooky, can be bratty. Gorgeous markings, great little horse. Will be started under saddle early Spring 09. This pony will also learn to ground drive only - I do not have carts so I can not train her to pull one. Adoption fee $500.00.

This little Arabian mare is purebred, pedigreed, and was terribly starved and neglected. She has had a terrible wire cut that almost cut her poor neck in half. She is 13 years old , 13.3 hands, and papered. She is a granddaughter of Khemosabi and a great granddaughter of Bask. Back to health, she was also terribly spoiled and had to be completely retrained. Gracie is a stall weaver. She was kept stalled at one time which caused this habit. She is now giving lessons to intermediate riders in Dressage and Western. She is a wonderful trail horse, sweet and safe, but needs a firm hand at times. GORGEOUS extensions. She is a great lesson horse. For sale $1500.

This is a neat little paint gelding with lots of potential. 7 years old, has been ridden in the Marble Mountains and by teens. Spunky, flashy, great with his feet, sane and sound. Approx 14.2. Great gaming horse. Needs a brushup on ground manners - pushy - and standing still while mounting. Intermediate to experienced rider. Lots of go. Asking price $800.00

The horses that are up for adoption have limited training, special needs, or are back to health after a bad situation. These horses will continue to be for adoption until a home can be found for them. If they do not find a home, they will be trained as soon as I have time to do so, and eventually make the for sale list below so that I can go on rescuing other horses. Down Under Mustangs is a no-kill rescue, except in the case of terminal or incurable painful illnesses.
